Helen Smith
Baytown Texas “Pie Lady”
76 Year Old Homebased Business Owner – Shares Her SUCCESS story!
Helen Smith has been baking pies for 50+years. Helen is known as the “Pie Lady of Baytown.” She was the former owner of Helen’s Kitchen in Baytown. Recently she accomplished her long-time dream by publishing a cookbook. The 84 page recipe book is complete with a glossary of cooking terms, helpful hints for everything from calorie counting to how to clean pots and pans. These books are selling like hotcakes partially due to her appearance on KPRC local 2 titled: The Texas Pie Story.
In the early 1980s Helen lost her secretarial job when the company she worked for went out of business. She decided to bake pies to make ends meet and five local restaurants agreed to put her pies on their menus. With the encouragement that success can bring, she purchased another oven and expanded her business. She began baking pies from early morning to dusk. Her next step was to open her own store where she and a small staff crafted pies, cakes and sandwiches.
In her first year, she brought in more than $100,000. As demand increased, so did the size of the building and her staff. Smith expanded her company to include pre-packaged pie crusts, which she sold to major supermarket chains in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. In 1988 the tiny business that Smith nurtured from its beginning in her home kitchen received national attention.
She was honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration with the Woman Advocate of the Year Award. Her cookbook is called Famous Old Fashioned Recipes.
