Russell Simmons a life time achievement award recipient, is one of the most influential media moguls in America. In 1984 he created the seminal Def Jam Recordings label which almost single-handily started the hip hop cultural revolution.
In 1991 he launched Def Comedy Jam on HBO… fast forward to today…
COMEDY CENTRAL is pairing up with hip hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons and his partner Stan Lathan, the duo that brought the world the genre-defining urban comedy show “Def Comedy Jam,” to bring viewers the next generation of breakout talent in the series premiere of “Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at The El Rey.” This show debuts with a special hour-long block of episodes on Sunday, July 11 at 11:00 p.m.
Each episode of “Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at The El Rey” will be made available in HD and SD for download-to-own the day after the episode premieres on iTunes, Xbox LIVE Marketplace, Zune and Sony Playstation Network.
Executive Producers Simmons and Lathan co-own The Simmons Lathan Media Group, a film and television production and acquisitions company that develops and distributes urban content across a variety of media platforms.
COMEDY CENTRAL, the only all-comedy network, currently is seen in more than 98 million homes nationwide.

On a more personal note, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Simmons joined 22 other top executives in the apparel and home fashions industry to form Fashion Delivers Charitable Foundation, Inc. to unify the apparel and home fashions industry to donate new products to help needy individuals and families who fell victim to one of the USA’s worst natural disasters.
In March 2006, Simmons and wife Kimora Lee separated. However, they remain business associates, as well as parents to their two daughters, Aoki and Ming Lee.
